A pupdate on senior gal Lilah Bernstein. We rescued this lovely lady back in December. Although on the euthanasia list for "fear", her real issues were medical. Her "brother" was much younger than her, at about 8 years old, all he needed was a good grooming, a dental cleaning, and he was quickly adopted. Lilah took a bit more work. Lilah lost every tooth in her mouth when she had her dental. A shave down revealed ears packed full of crud and infection. Eyes goopy and infected from untreated dry eye. Medication and she's good as new! Yeah, we wish, but not so much. Lilah also suffers from pretty bad allergies, they just happen to manifest in her ears. This poor gal looks like she blows her nose through her ears. frown emoticon A food change, keeping her ears and eyes shaved down, daily ear cleanings, eye drops two-three times a day, and we have it somewhat under control. However, this is something that must be done daily, there are no vacation days with her care--or she will be right back to square one. Will we find an adopter willing to put in the time and dedication for Lilah? Hard to say, when there are so many sweet, adorable pups out there who don't require the care she does. It's easy--she is such a good girl for her medications, but it is still a routine she will need for the rest of her life. Between her eye drops, special food (canned Fish/Sweet Potato Grain Free), ear medications--it's about $70/month. Not a huge chunk of change--but the average wait time for a dog like her to be adopted is a year...so it does add up. Just another perspective on where donations and adoption fees go. So, pretty soon we will put Lilah up for adoption, but wanted to give a behind the scenes look at what it's like...getting them ready and what it takes. We love our special needs kiddos.
